Every sale, purchase and transfer follows California and federal law — background checks, eligibility, the waiting period, all of it. Not sure whether something can be bought, sold or transferred? Call first and ask — we’d rather answer the question than waste your trip.

Take your FSC test here — $25

California requires a valid Firearm Safety Certificate before you can take home almost any firearm. We’re a DOJ Certified Instructor location, so you can sit the 30-question test right at the counter. It’s $25, and it’s good for five years.

Buying a gun in California.

The short version of how it works. Come in and we’ll take you through your part of it.

Who can buy a firearm in California?

You must be at least 21 to buy a firearm from a dealer, pass a background check, and meet California’s eligibility rules. If you’re 18–20, you can buy a rifle or shotgun — but not a handgun — with a valid California hunting license.

Do I need a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC)?

Yes. With narrow exceptions, you need a valid FSC before you can take a firearm home. It’s a 30-question written test on firearm safety and basic law, and you need 75% to pass. It costs $25, it’s valid for five years, and you can take it right here — we’re a DOJ Certified Instructor location. (A valid hunting license covers you for long guns only.)

How long does it take to get my gun?

California has a 10-day waiting period. You start the background-check paperwork — it’s called the DROS — and do the safe-handling demonstration when you begin, then come back after the ten days to pick it up. It’s the same wait for everyone; there’s no way to shorten it.

Can I buy any handgun I want?

Any handgun we sell — new or used — has to be on California’s Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale. If it isn’t on the roster, we can’t sell it. The process is the same either way: background check, FSC and the 10-day wait. (An off-roster handgun can still come to you as a private-party transfer, which we also do.)

What should I bring?

A valid California driver’s license or state ID, and your FSC — or plan to take the test here the same day. Depending on what you’re buying there can be a document or two more, so call ahead and we’ll tell you exactly what to bring and make it one trip.
